New theme parks anticipated for Queensland

Three new theme parks are being developed in the southeast region of Queensland with the state embracing a striking increase in tourism that saw 2015-16 gain an 8 per cent rise.

Chinese tourism company Songcheng Performance have announced plans for an ‘Australian Legends Work’ theme park in Nerang on the Gold Coast, with proposed concepts including a model of Uluru, a zone dedicated to the gold rush era, and an Aboriginal camp and cultural area. A ferry is expected to offer alternative transport to the park, with plans to connect ferry routes to Metricon Stadium and Surfers’ Paradise. The park is expected to open in 2018.

Aussie World’s legendary Ettamoggah Pub located on Bruce Highway in Palmview is currently getting a huge makeover to be more appealing to the current younger generation. Since 2011, eight new rides have opened, but Aussie world want to make the most of the 22 hectare site, and introduce more exciting rides. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, a selection of new rides including the Bombora Bounce and the Drop and Twist Tower are expected to open in mid December.

Sunshine Coast’s Steve Irwin Way, a few minutes from the popular Australia Zoo, will be the site for a new water sports and adventure-park that will include thrilling activities like kayaking, net climbing, Segway and electric skateboard riding, zip lining and paddle boarding. Still in early planning stages, the theme park organisers have already received approval for the site, and are currently awaiting application approval from Sunshine Coast Council.

In addition to the theme parks, Mt Coo-tha Botanical Gardens in Brisbane will have a new $3.4 million Visitor Information Centre by mid-2017 as part of a $15 million revamp on the Mt Coot-tha parklands, which also includes proposals for a a flying fox to run through the Mt Coot-tha Parklands.

Brisbane’s Park and Environment committee chairman Cr David McLachlan told Sydney Morning Herald that the parklands will receive upgrades to JC Slaughter Falls, the Simpsons Falls picnic areas and walking tracks including tracks to remains of the 1940s Ghost Hole gold mine. The park is popular with tourists for the spectacular Mt Coot-tha Lookout and nature walks.
