Australia’s endless summer swapped for snow sessions

Australia’s endless summer swapped for snow sessions

Aussie are traditionally a bunch of beach bums who love the summer, however as freezing temps hit around the country and significant snow falls in the mountains, the number of Australians preferring the winter months is growing.

New research from OmniPoll in The 2016 National Winter Report, commissioned by Thredbo Resort, suggests Aussies actually prefer the cooler winter months, with the love affair even more widespread amongst millennials.

Results revealed, 40 percent of Australians now prefer winter over summer, up from 25 percent in 2014 and 41 percent of the population has enjoyed a snow holiday, while 59 percent are still yet to discover the magic of a winter wonderland.

The more Australians experience the snow, the more they want to go back, with 54 percent of those who have been on snow holidays several times, planning to go back this year.

Not surprisingly, 84 percent of young adults (aged 18 – 24) are big fans of winter, who like to show off what they are up to with 47 percent posting more on social media when on holiday.

When asked what the appeal is for first timers to the snow, the snowy landscape, snow experiences, and the wintery weather listed as the top moments to share while on a winter escape.

Thredbo Director of Brand Development, Angus Thomson, said “the results from the 2016 National Winter Report are really interesting, it’s exciting to see the growing number of Australians loving the cool, crisp winter over the hotter summer months, and there’s no better way to embrace the winter season than to experience the real thing on a snow holiday.”

To encourage first-timers to take the powdery plunge, Thredbo has partnered with Olympic gold medallist Torah Bright in developing a Beginner Ski & Snowboard package, aimed at giving people the opportunity to experience the magic of winter.

Nestled in the heart of Australia’s Snowy Mountains, Thredbo is the ultimate winter destination; whether you want to tackle Australia’s longest runs, take on a snowball fight in the free Snow Play Park, or experience the magic of the snow for the very first time with various beginner’s packages, there’s something for everyone at Australia’s premier alpine resort. Thredbo also offers impressive packages for every group, including couples, families, friends and more. More information on winter packages is available here.

In the past week, Thredbo received 90cm of fresh powder, with another 8 – 20cm predicted to fall over the coming days. Excitement for the 2016 season is running high, with a huge line up of music, events and celebrations to keep the party going, including headline sets from Safia, The Jungle Giants and Gypsy & the Cat.
