Stars shun legendary Hollywood hotel

What was once a hide-away spot for stars and one of the most iconic hotels of its era now serves as one of Los Angeles most popular tourist accommodation reservations.

From Marilyn Monroe to Charlie Chaplin and Clark Gable, the Roosevelt Hotel in star-tiled Hollywood Boulevard has in the past been home to some of Hollywood’s biggest names.

Celebrities have over the years been spotted at the Library Bar adjacent to the lobby, sipping martinis along the poolside at the Tropicana bar or celebrating in the hotel’s ballroom.

But according to a staff member of the hotel, Hollywood’s A-listers have slowly stepped back from the hotel where Shirley Temple once tap-danced her way though the lobby doors – because of the growing tourism scene.

“It was always a hide-away for the stars. Marilyn Monroe started her career here – she did her first full commercial, just a photoshoot here,” the staff member told AAP.

“I feel like they are deterred because Hollywood is more a tourist place now.

“(The hotel) is more of an event space now. That’s when you really see the stars when they come to movie premieres.”

The venue recently transformed into a fantasy kingdom, housing the likes of Emilia Clarke, Peter Dinklage, Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner for the premiere of Game of Thrones season six.

Visitors have also deemed the hotel to be haunted by the late Hollywood stars who once walked on the Spanish tiles but the hotel worker says she has never come across any ghosts.

While the palm trees have grown taller and greener and the hotel has undergone several aesthetic changes since its opening in 1927, the Roosevelt still charms and serves as an oasis to visitors from around the world.
