New Uruguayan airline takes to the skies
By admin

Alas Uruguay airline, comprised of personnel from the bankrupt carrier Pluna, will begin operating this week with a flight from Montevideo to Asuncion.

The flight will depart from the Carrosco international airport and tickets “are being sold just like those of any other airline,’ said Sergio Riolfo, the company’s airports and services manager.

Alas Uruguay is scheduled to “gradually” begin regular flights to destinations including Buenos Aires, Santiago, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, and from Buenos Aires to the Uruguayan coastal resort of Punta del Este.

Pluna ceased operations in July 2012 although most of its personnel remained in contact and over time gathered the necessary support to create Alas Uruguay.

In May 2014, the former employees formed a general partnership and reached an agreement with the Uruguayan government to gain access to a $US15 million ($A21.87 million) credit line from the Development Fund, which enabled them to launch Alas Uruguay.

Three Boeing 737-300 aircraft – which each can carry 132 passengers – make up the firm’s fleet. Two of them are from Ukraine and the third aircraft is from the United States.
