Which Hawaiian Island are you?
It has long been the stuff of daydreams for the world’s citizens.
And yet Hawaii cannot be painted with the same stroke, as each of its six islands are stand-alone destinations in their own right.
And it’s not just about the scenery – each island also has a distinct atmosphere. We help you determine which client belongs on which island.
The nature lover: Kauai
That client who is frazzled, impatiently tapping their feet and in need of a holiday that will soothe and offer respite from the day to day? It has to be Kauai.
This is the island to choose if you want to reconnect with nature. It is as lush and abundant as you imagine Hawaii to be. It is as dramatic as it is soft, with jungle draped over vertiginous mountains.
There are no crowds, no queues, no traffic and no stress. This is not an island you visit to tick the sightseeing boxes, it is an island for immersion and for staying put in one place – aside from some road day-tripping.
Movers and shakers: Oahu
The most famous of all the islands, this is the go-to recommendation for two ends of the spectrum: families and millennials.
It caters to everyone of course, but the sheer variety of entertainment and activities on offer lend itself to two rather different demographics.
This will not be a flop and drop holiday – although it can be – but the client who seeks out Oahu will be active and have a list of things to tick off their Hawaii bucket list.
Shopping and nightlife is a strong differentiator for the visitor to Oahu. It reels in those who like action, from surfing to hiking.
The spiritual seeker: Molokai
Hawaii Tourism calls Molokai the enlightening island, and is the place for clients who seek an authentic and spiritual experience.
This is the place that puts the Hawaiian philosophy of Aloha into practice. The communities are small, the roads are empty, the locals all have a story to tell and you can learn more about Hawaiian culture and ideology than from any other island.
If your client is up for the enlightenment, tell them to remain open-minded and interact with the locals. The town of Kaunakakai is more accurately described as a fishing village and the catch of the day is always fresh, with fisherman on the case each day before dawn.
Spontaneous jetsetter: Maui
Do you have a client sitting in front of you who wants a Hawaii trip in the next few weeks, a spur of the moment decision spurned on by their spontaneity?
Well, Maui is just the island, for it incorporates a plethora of activities but the clincher is that they can take it or leave it. Bookings in advance are not required, so this free spirit can be as spontaneous as they like once there.
Not so good for added value commissions, but we would suggest it will foster a money-can’t-buy loyalty. Hawaii Tourism describes their ideal visitor as someone who wants to have fun without being on a schedule.
Mostly, Maui is about soft adventure without the commitment.
The tranquil traveller: Lanai
This is the embracing isle, where peace and quiet reigns supreme. It is the place for long walks and legends that inform the Hawaiian sensibility.
These can be seen at the Garden of the Gods and Sweetheart Rock, both places with a story and virtue to tell. Folklore comes to life on Lanai and there are dirt roads for tripping, quirky shops such as the Dis n’ Dat shop and dolphins offshore.
One of the main attractions is a rock garden that resembles the moon, while the most active is a hike to the island’s highest point at Lanaihale which stands at more than one thousand metres.
The busy bee: Hawaii
Want drama? This is the destination du jour.
The island has a total of seven biospheres, so your client can literally go from snow-capped peaks to hot molten lava creep in a matter of hours.
The big island is the tonic for the down-trodden, for those who want to experience awe and recall a child-like curiosity. Bursting with natural wonders, it is an ideal destination for couples and honeymooners who want to share spectacular, memorable experiences.
This is the island of the trophy photo shot for all those social media followers back home. It is the ideal island to road trip, so tell them to pack their driving license.
