8 tips to the perfect roadtrip

Everyone loves a roadtrip.

Whether you’re trekking across the great United States, or packing the car up for an Aussie east coast cruise, there’s no holiday quite like it.

And in the spirit of roadtrips, Mystery Box Rally will hits the streets along as 150 participants farewell the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge and the city mayhem of George Street, and head off to explore some of the most picturesque and unique country landscapes in Australia.

It is a road trip to rival the world’s greatest drives and all whilst raising much needed funds for cancer treatment and research.

For that reason, we’ve counted down the best ways to absolutely nail the epic roadtrip you’ve always dreamed of. Here’s the hot tips:

1. The ultimate playlist

With every great road trip, there needs to be the greatest playlist. It’s the song you bob along to when you’re driving down the straight, the hit lyrics you sing at the top of your lungs when it’s just you and the road, and the ballad that consoles you when you get a flat. Take the time to make a playlist that will get you to the finish line.

2. Pack lightly

Keeping your packing to a minimum means you have plenty of room to pick up new treasuresalong the way. And if you’re travelling with a group, you’ll also have room to gather your friends if one of their cars doesn’t make it.

3. Ask a local where to eat

When you’re in a small country town you can trust that everyone will be at the one place to eat. But in larger towns and cities, the best places to eat are where you’ll find the locals, so ask around!

4. Bring a spare key

If you’re driving a Mystery Box there’s a high chance not all your windows will wind up, but if you’re travelling on your own road trip, packing a spare key away isalways a good idea.

The moment you lock your car with the keys on the seat,will be the same moment you realise you’re 400km from the nearest town.

5. Leave the plan wide open

Whether it’s quaint cafes, small towns off the beat or an afternoon on a secluded beach.Keep some time up your sleeve to discover the hidden gems along the way!

If you’re on a tight schedule, it’s best to plan where you’ll be sleeping eachnight so you know how far you have to travel each day and how much fuel you’ll need along the way. Aside from that, embrace the adventure!

6. Keep off the googling

The best surprises are exactly that – surprises! While you can google ‘what to do’ till your hearts content, there’s nothing like the advice of locals or stumblingacross the best kept secret in town.

Coastal walks, outback pubs, waterfalls and the best bowling green this side of Alice Springs. When you don’t know what to expect, you’ll discover the hidden gems of the places you’re visiting.

7. Keep hydrated, and don’t forget the esky

Stay hydrated by refilling water bottles each morning, and keep an esky in the boot for when you stumble across those ‘from where you’d rather be’ spectacular sunsets with a glass of wine or beer in hand.
