US airlines rake in most ancillary revenue

America, experts in super-sizing everything, have gone and topped the world’s ancillary revenue list as well.

In a Skift report that is no surprise to anyone, the three major US airlines are top performers, earning $38.1 billion in ancillary revenue in 2014, compared to the $31.5 billion earned in 2013.

IdeaWorks Company has released the numbers on airline ancillary performance for 2014, and despite airlines around the world increasing their ancillary revenues by nearly 21%, America had to go and be number one.

The company’s report considers the performance of 63 airlines around the world—both major flag carriers and low-cost—which disclose ancillary revenue in their financial reports.

“Ancillary revenue is an increasingly important indicator of commercial success, and a major contributor to the bottom line of airlines across the globe,” Sponsor of the report CarTrawler’s chief commercial officer Michael Cunningham said, writes Skift.

“The secret to unlocking this revenue stream can be found in the data that customers generate with every transaction.”

According to Skift, airline ancillary revenue was up by $6.6 billion in 2014 over 2013, and a whopping $35.65 billion more than the ancillary revenues of airlines reporting in 2007.
