The world’s largest luxury hotel unveiled

Boasting four helipads, 10,000 bedrooms and 70 restaurants this will be one heck of a hotel, but not every tourist will be flocking to see it.

The world’s largest luxury hotel is set to open its lavish doors in Saudi Arabia in 2017, about 1.5km away from the Grand Mosque in the holy city of Mecca.

Construction has already commenced on the (£2.3bn) A$4.5 billion Abraj Kudai’s 10,000 rooms, 70 restaurants, a full sized convention centre and five floors solely dedicated for use by the Saudi royal family, all roofed under what will become one of the largest domes in the world, according to DesignMENA.

The project by Dar Al Handasah group, which has overseen the design of cities and airports, will include 12 44-storey towers across a total area of 4.6 million square feet, with 10 towers to offer four-star accommodation with the remaining two to boast lavish interiors and five-star opulence. Abraj-Kudai-4

Designed to “reflect a contemporary interpretation of a traditional desert fortress,” according to DesignMENA, London-based Areen Hospitality has been appointed to design the interior spaces, “which will be complete with palatial luxury typical of the region”.

“The city is turning into Mecca-hattan,” UK-based Islamic Heritage Research Foundation director Irfan Al-Alawi told the Guardian.

“Everything has been swept away to make way for the incessant march of luxury hotels, which are destroying the sanctity of the place and pricing normal pilgrims out.”

Mecca receives more than 15 million pilgrims each year.
