Out and About with Sue Bohme

We chatted with Sue Bohme, the manager of premiere gay travel agency, Out and About Travel, ahead of the fabulous weekend that is Mardi Gras.

Why travel?

It feeds the soul, takes you out of your comfort zone and makes you appreciate what is important.

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.

– Mark Twain

The challenge for the travel industry is…

Misconceptions about destinations

The things I like about my job…

Making dreams a reality and constantly discovering new experiences and travelling

And the frustrations are …

Small mindedness

If I didn’t work in travel I would be…

Travelling

What is your favourite destination?

African continent, anywhere with good food!!

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Cape Town, it is such a stunning, vibrant and fun city. Istanbul, a fabulous city to explore enjoy culinary delights. Rome, a truly romantic city, that you never want leave and overwhelms with it history..

What is your favourite Mardi Gras memory?

Dancing under a mirror ball with 30 or so Diana Rosses on stage doing a melody

Where’s your next destination to travel to?

Norfolk then Miami then Italy

The best advice I’ve ever received was…

Breathe and back yourself

I don’t understand why people…

Hate

My greatest weakness is…

Women

And my greatest strength is…

Curiosity

What are your top 5 travel tips?

  1. Educate yourself about the destination.
  2. Have a sense of humour and smile
  3. Learn some local words
  4. Relax and take in the environment.
  5. Get lost every now and then, throw away the guide book, some of the best things are discovered this way.

The naughtiest thing I ever did was…

Too naughty to tell….

The last time I feared for my life was…

Hurtling down a mountain road in India in a rickshaw with no brakes and the engine off

What is a must-have in your suitcase when travelling?

Passport and sense of humour

How are you celebrating Mardi Gras this year?

Queer screen festival and off to Mona for the weekend
