Regulated air travel for Queensland a win for Rex and QantasLink

QantasLink and Regional Express (REX) have been awarded routes throughout regional and rural Queensland through the government's competitive tender designed to retain air travel. 

Rex won the tender for 5 routes including Townsville — Winton — Longreach; Townsville — Hughenden — Richmond — Julia Creek — Mount Isa; Cairns — Normanton — Gununa (Mornington Island) — Burketown -Doomadgee — Mount Isa — Beri; Brisbane -Toowoomba — St George — Cunnamulla — Thargomindah; and Charleville — Quilpie — Windorah — Birdsville-Bedourie — Boulia — Mount Isa.

Through the new contract, Rex claims it will become one of the biggest regional operators in Queensland as its destinations across Australia will increase from 36 to 52. 

Rex, general manager network strategy and sales, Warrick Lodge said the airline has also grown passenger numbers on its existing contracted routes by almost 100%.

Meanwhile QantasLink has been awarded the Brisbane – Roma – Charleville route as well as the Brisbane – Longreach. 

QantasLink will upgrade all Roma, Longreach, Barcaldine and Blackall services to provide a quieter, more comfortable and faster travel experience aboard the newly appointed 74-seat Q400 aircraft. Whilst, all Charleville services will be upgraded to the Q300 aircraft.
