Tas tourism hits record high

An island getaway has never been so popular: Tasmania has recorded its highest number of visitors for the 12 months to July.

Figures released by Tourism Tasmania show more than a million people from interstate and overseas headed to the island state for holidays, business and to visit friends and family.

"It is the most number of visitors our state has ever recorded in a single 12-month period," tourism chief executive John Fitzgerald said on Thursday.

The figure is a 10 per cent increase on the previous annual period, and the number of Chinese visitors heading to Australia's southernmost state jumped by 61 per cent.

The majority (89 per cent) of visitors travelled to Tasmania by air, and for about 30 per cent it was their first trip to Tassie.

"It seems there's plenty of potential for us to maintain our trajectory towards the target of 1.5 million visitors per annum by 2020," Mr Fitzgerald said.

Tourism injects about $2.4 billion annually into Tasmania's economy and directly employs about 17,000 people.
