Thailand popularity on downward slide: Trivago
By admin

Australian searches for accommodation in Thailand have plummeted by 32% since its military takeover with the decrease part of a wider global trend, according to hotel search engine Trivago.

The military’s declaration it was taking control of the country on May 22 sparked search declines averaging 27% worldwide. The largest drops were seen in Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Canada and the US.

“It is unfortunate timing for Thai tourism, with Europeans and Americans now searching for summer holidays and with Australians looking for somewhere warmer to escape the winter,” a Trivago spokesperson said.

However, the data also revealed that searches of neighbouring countries have simultaneously spiked by 7%, with Vietnam particularly benefitting as searches surged 29%.

“It will be interesting to see if travel interest to surrounding countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia continues to increase in the future and these destinations become a more permanent alternative among Australian travellers,” the spokesperson said.

The findings contradict yesterday’s comments by AirAsia X head of international marketing Stuart Myerscough who insisted demand for travel to Thailand remained undiminished, despite the ongoing political turmoil.
