Giant human whale gets beached in Port Stephens
By admin

A giant human whale was formed on Shoal Beach in New South Wales yesterday to celebrate the end of Japan’s whaling program in the Southern Ocean whale sanctuary and the start of the local whale watching season.

The initiative by Destination Port Stephens, whale cruise operators and Karingal Preschool saw a whale created on the western end of the Port Stephens beach on Sunday at 11am, with a helicopter and chopper drone capturing the whale shape from the air.

The event marks a landmark commitment by the Japanese Government that it would abide by the International Court of Justice’s ruling the practice of whaling in Antaractic waters is unlawful and not “scientific”.

It also marks the beginning of the 2014 whale-watching season, with 17,000 whales  expected to be seen off Port Stephens in coming months as they migrate for the winter along the Humpback Highway.

More than 50,000 visitors travel to Port Stephens each year to spot the magnificent humpbacks, injecting $10 million into the local economy.
