A cheese rolling race, gravy wrestling and an egg throwing competition may not be the first things that comes to mind when you think of England.

But, although famous for its historic landmarks and royal family, England is also home to some of the quirkiest traditions and events.

This year’s season of bizarre events kicked off in a messy mud race on May 25, with a series of other wacky customs and pastimes to take place during the summer.

Some of the events include:

Maldon Mud Race, Essex – May 25

Join competitors in a mad scramble through the stinking, ink-black mud of the Blackwater Estuary to raise money for local charities.

Cheese Rolling, Gloucestershire – May 26

Daredevils chase cheeses down the steep, grassy slopes of Coopers Hill. With competitors running, rolling and somersaulting down the hill it is a great spectator event.

Cotswold Olimpicks, Gloucestershire – May 30

This event features some well-known games such as tug-o-war, obstacle races and wrestling, as well as a few bizarre ones such as shin-kicking, which involves players kicking each other until one of the contestants is so bruised that he admits defeat.
