Diwali lights up

Diwali lights up

Diwali is a word that few Australians are familiar with, but to the 1 billion Hindus around the world, Diwali, otherwise known as the festival of lights, is one of the most important dates in the calendar.

""

This year the five-day festival is scheduled to begin on November 3.

It is characterised by the lighting of millions of small oil-based lamps which commemorate the victory of good over evil while the trail of light is believed to guide heroes home.

""

At other points in the festival the bursting of firecrackers scare off evil spirits while families clean their homes with vigour to make the Goddess Lakshmi feel welcome.

""

Informed by a deeply spiritual perspective, Hindus the world over seek prayer and look to their inner light or Atman for awakening.

""

But bursts of colour – as is often the case in India – are never far away, be it via the impeccable new Sari robes of a mother, ornate lanterns or a wayard firecracker.

""

""

To visit India and experience this amazing festival, Cox and Kings offer its Fortis and Palaces of Rajasthan itinerary that had datees which coincide with Diwali 2014.

Prices start from $4043.
