Second Sydney Airport site draws near

The Australian Government is expected to make a decision on the site of Sydney’s second airport within months – maybe as early as this year – with Badgery’s Creek again emerging at the most likely location.

Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said it will wait for the release of Sydney Airport’s master plan in December before making a decision.

“We’ll identify a preferred site either late this year or early next year,” he told the ABC. “On the basis of the Sydney master plan that’s being developed and the other information that’s been put together through a series of government inquiries and examinations that have been going on for more than a decade, I’d expect a decision within months.”

A construction timeframe will also be guided by the master plan.

Truss rejected the Richmond Air Force base as a credible location, describing it as too small, and hinted that Badgery’s Creek could be the preferred option.

Badgery’s Creek was chosen as the best site a decade ago, is government owned and “remains a strong contender”, he said.
