Govt urges Aussies to leave Egypt

Govt urges Aussies to leave Egypt
By admin

The government has upgraded its travel warning for Egypt as tour operators were dealt another blow in their efforts to keep even a modicum of sales trickling in.

With simmering unrest in Cairo showing no sign of easing, the foreign office urged Australians to reconsider their need to travel, the second highest level. Australians already in Egypt have been advised to leave.

“Australians thinking of travelling to Egypt should postpone their trip and those already there should consider departing,” foreign minister Bob Carr said. “Large and sometimes violent protests have occurred in major cities including Cairo and there are reports that further rallies are planned.

“Our strong advice to all Australians in Egypt is to avoid involvement in street protests, even as an observer.”

Those who choose to stay should register their travel with the Australian Embassy in Cairo and monitor developments.

Civil unrest has left at least 16 dead and 700 injured as demonstrators demand the resignation of Egypt’s first democratically elected leader, Mohamed Morsi.

The reconsider your need to travel warning is just one below the highest ‘do no travel’ advice.
