More voyages cancelled as Carnival takes stock

Carnival Cruise Lines will cancel a further 12 cruises aboard vessels Triumph and Sunshine as it takes steps to improve back-up systems on board following a spate of headline-grabbing incidents.

The 4200-passenger Triumph drifted for four days off the coast of Mexico in February after a fire struck its engine room with many passengers reporting squalid conditions on board.

Those complaints were echoed last week when Carnival Dream also experienced "technical issues". A further ship, Carnival Legend, was also forced to cancel one stop in the Grand Cayman Islands at the weekend due to problems with its propulsion system.

The extension of the out-of-service period for both ships marks the first phase of a fleetwide operational review.

CCL said: "The cruise line is making is making significant investments to enhance the level of operating redundancies and the scope of hotel services that can run on emergency power, an further improve each ship's fire prevention, detection and suppession systems."

Carnival Triumph will return to service on June 3, with a total of 10 additional cruises being cancelled, with Sunshine to return on May 5, following the cancellation fo two European cruises.

Guests on the affected voyages will receive a full refund, reimbursement for non-refundable transport costs and a 25% discount on a future cruise, CCL confirmed.
