Transport minister Anthony Albanese has said the Government will seek further bilateral air services talks with a number of key markets this year as he desescribed Australia as "one of the most open international markets in the world".

He revealed that discussions will take place with the EU, China, Hong Kong "and other key markets in Asia".

But in a speech at the Asia Pacific Aviation/Aerospace Leaders Summit, the minister said it was also crucial to balance the benefits of increasing capacity with the need for a strong locally-based aviation industry.

An Amadeus study has estimated that long distance rail passenger traffic will increase by 21% to reach more than 1.36 billion by 2020.
