Thailand reports record year

Thailand has reported a "record-breaking" year for overseas visitor arrivals in 2012, as the number of Australian visitors to the destination climbed 12.1% on the previous year.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand revealed total arrivals had climbed 16% on 2011 to hit 22.3 million for the year – the first time arrivals have crossed the 22 million mark. Australian arrivals totalled 930,599.

TAT governor Suraphon Svetasreni commended the "cooperation and the creativity" of the country's travel and tourism industry in achieving the result, which he also attributed to the prevalence of global, regional and local stability.

"Last year, the world was generally at peace and there were no major geopolitical, economic, environmental or natural disasters and no health pandemics," he added.

"Travel and tourism can only flourish worldwide if the underlying conditions that support it remain free of disturbance and disruption."

The tourism body predicted 24.5 million arrivals in 2013 and a projected tourism income of 1,149 billion baht "if the global, regional and local situation remains stable".
