Tourism Fiji chief quits role

Tourism Fiji acting chief executive Michael Meade has quit the post and is returning to Sydney for “family and personal reasons”.

Meade is understood to have informed the board of his decision late last week. He was appointed in December following the resignation of Josefa Tuamoto.

Tourism Fiji chairman and Air Pacific chief executive Dave Pflieger will take the role of executive chairman while the tourism body's Fiji manager, Thomas Valentine, takes on interim administrative duties until a permanent chief executive is found.

A statement from Tourism Fiji said a new chief executive will be appointed “over the next few months”.

Pflieger said Meade helped Tourism Fiji “through a period of great organisational change”.

“He also assisted us through a particularly challenging time following some of the worst flooding in Fiji’s history,” he added.

Meade said he was proud of Tourism Fiji’s achievements in such a short period of time.

“Tourism Fiji is well on its way to being able to showcase an innovative and universally appealing new brand in both emerging and traditional markets,” he said. “I look forward to continuing to assist Tourism Fiji and ensuring a seamless transition to the new permanent CEO.”
