Tiger Airways Singapore and Scoot are set to cooperate on travel between Australia and a variety of South East Asian destinations, with the signing of a wide-reaching agreement.

And they flagged a deepening of the relationship remained a possibility which could require approval from regulatory authorities for anti-trust immunity.

The initial phase of the Memorandum of Understanding will see both low cost carriers market joint itineraries from Scoot’s Australian ports, Sydney and Gold Coast, to Tiger destinations Phuket, Ho Chi Minh City and Kuala Lumpur via Singapore.

The interline itineraries, now on sale for travel from October 15, entitle passengers to a 15kg baggage allowance although they will have to pass through immigration and retrieve checked baggage when connecting at Changi.

The next phase will see customers able to purchase flight itineraries originating in South East Asia along with the introduction of a new direct connection process.

Tiger Airways Group chief executive Koay Peng Yen said the timing was right following the airline’s move to its new “den” at Changi Airport Terminal 2.

“It’s the perfect time to leverage the strength of our networks to our customers’ benefits,” he said. “The joint itineraries and new services that we will be rolling out will greatly expand the travel options for both Tiger and Scoot customers.”

Meanwhile, Scoot chief executive Campbell Wilson described both networks as “highly complementary” with Scoot focused on medium-haul and Tiger on shorter-haul.

“Both airlines operate side by side at Singapore Changi Terminal 2, and share a common philosophy of offering fuss-free service at unbeatable value,” he said.
