Emirates to ‘deal a sledgehammer’ to US allegations

Emirates’ president Tim Clark has said that the US government will need to give the airline the time to respond to US airlines’ allegations of state subsidies.

Gulf carriers Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad were accused of breaching “open skies” guidelines by Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and United Airlines in January. Together they claim the Gulf carriers received some US$40 billion in state subsidies in the last decade, enabling them to drive down ticket prices and push competitors out of key markets.

Following the presentation of the 55-page dossier, several European carriers also chimed in on the allegations of state subsidiaries, which Clark said are entirely false.

“You could drive a bulldozer through almost everything they wrote about us,” he said, describing the dossier once again as “flim flam tosh.”

Clark, speaking to journalists at ATM 2015 in Dubai said that the airline will take its time to respond, highlighting that the US government composed the dossier over two years, despite being at the forefront of aviation discussions of late.

“We will respond in a very robust manner,” he said. “We will do it in our own time and we will deal a sledgehammer to their report.”

“We have never been subsidised, we have grown this business from when I first came in 1985, from nothing to 235-240 aircraft today…. without state intervention, without state funding”.

Clark announced that the priority will be first and foremost rebutting the accusations. At this stage, there will be no court action taken against U.S airlines.
