What people are eating in the air

With the rollout of Qantas’ new economy in-flight dining on international flights now complete, Travel Weekly finds out what dishes have been a hit.

The new meals served on international flights departing all 24 Australian ports are 50% bigger and tastier according to recent passengers’ customer satisfaction ratings, which hit record high levels in February.

With a wider range of choice, as well as a pre-ordered “Select on Q Eat” option via the Qantas website, the airline has also taken into consideration the destination to prepare meals, such as with its Asian and American flights.

So what are passengers picking from the new menu? Qantas told Travel Weekly one of the most popular meals thus far has been its classic osso bucco with roast potatoes, green beans and peas.

Meanwhile, passengers on US flights are choosing the healthy salad option; chicken salad with toasted pepita seeds, broccoli, green beans and aioli dressing but those jetting off to Hong Kong and Shanghai prefer the hot meals such as traditional lamb moussaka with broccoli and sugar snaps, tamarind chicken with stir fried vegetables and hokkien noodles, and stir fried pork with plum sauce and egg fried rice.

A Qantas spokesperson said the airline are also receiving positive feedback from its revamped breakfast menu, particularly the introduction of the fruit platter as a lighter option compared with its hot breakfast of scrambles eggs, bacon, sausages, roasted tomato and hash browns.

“Customers are also loving our mid-flight snacks especially the hot dogs with tomato relish and American mustard,” a Qantas spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, the most popular dish selected by customers via Select on Q Eat was the wagyu beef and “we have received great praise for Ruby and Roy’s chocolate mousse”, the airline spokesperson said.
