Rex adds two Boeing 737-800’s amid soaring domestic jet operations

Rex adds two Boeing 737-800’s amid soaring domestic jet operations

Regional Express has signed a letter of intent (LOI) to lease two more Boeing 737-800NGs following a profitable four months.

This addition will bring Rex’s number of 737-800s to nine in total as the airline looks to unlock extra capacity. The planes are on loan from Singapore Airlines and will officially join the airline in June and July.

Rex’s deputy chairman, John Sharp, commended the airline’s strong performance which saw the airline’s profitability return following the pandemic.

“The travelling public has been crying out for our reliable and affordable services in the light of the shameless price gouging by Qantas and these new additions will help to alleviate the situation,” Sharp said.

It has not been decided where the regional carrier will deploy these new aircraft, but Sharp has not ruled any routes out.

Rex’s domestic jet operations have been the real bread winner for the airline, with a reported Profit Before Tax (RBT) of $4 million in December mainly attributable to operations of Rex’s jets.

Rex began flying on major domestic routes in 2021, but still has a way to go before it catches up to the competitors.

Rex is Australia’s largest independent regional and domestic airline currently operating a fleet of 61 Saab 340 and seven Boeing 737-800NG aircraft to 58 destinations throughout all states in Australia. The airline has approximately 5 per cent of the market share, whereby its competitors Qantas and Virgin Australia has 75 and 65 737s respectively.
