Queenstown welcomes night flights

Air New Zealand will start night flights into Queenstown, taking effect from 3 July, just in time for the winter ski season.

The first commercial evening flight into Queenstown landed last night, albeit more than an hour later than scheduled. Air New Zealand flight NZ613 touched down just before 7:30pm, delayed from its scheduled arrival time of 6:15pm.

Extensive work had been done to upgrade the Queenstown runway to allow for the night flights, including airfield lighting, airline procedures and training in preparation for the new service.

Air New Zealand spokesman Cam Wallace said it was an exciting time to launch the service, just before the winter ski season.
