“#NothingToDeclare”: Travellers vow Ryanair boycott over World Cup jibe

Ryanair’s playful social media managers are back at it with a shot at England’s Football team after its loss against France during the FIFA World Cup this weekend.

The budget Irish airline, which is known for its amusing social media presence, tweeted “They’re coming home #NothingToDeclare,” alongside an image of a departure sign.

The joke here being a play on the English footballing anthem ‘Three Lions’ by the Liverpool-based band Lightning Seeds. The hit features the lyrics “It’s coming home, It’s coming home, It’s coming, Football’s coming home.”

But Ryanair’s joke has been met with outrage by some British football die-hards, with some going as far as threatening to boycott the airline altogether.

You just lost a lot of customers with this tweet 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿,” one user wrote.

“Imagine an Irish airway taking the p***, won’t be booking with you guys,” said another.

Other’s took the jab as a chance to criticise the airline.

“Shame your flights aren’t as punctual as your jokes.”

“How about concentrating on running an airline that’s not a total rip-off?” journalist James Brownsell said.

Another wrote: “They won’t be coming home with you lot when you cancel the flight.”

The airline even responded to one user’s reply with a humorous video.

Some Twitter users saw the humour in the tweet and took it as an opportunity to have a crack at England’s loss.

“God damn ryanair does not miss (unlike kane),” one user wrote.

“One must applaud the Irish commitment to ragging on the English whenever wherever whatever the occasion,” one said.

“This is trolling world class level 🤣🤣🤣,” another said.

Ryanair’s social media accounts have become quite popular across a variety of platforms due to their jokey nature and self-aware ribbing, according to The Washington Post.

The budget airline gets in on current trends, pokes fun at other airlines and has been having a field day with the FIFA World Cup.
