Jordan Peterson has a winge over Qantas’ in-flight “propaganda”

Jordan Peterson has taken to Twitter to complain about Qantas, claiming the airline is delivering “propaganda” through its in-flight acknowledgement of country.

The controversial academic posted a rant to Twitter complaining about a routine acknowledgement of country on his Qantas flight.

Peterson, who is famous for his right-wing views and strong opposition to ‘political correctness’, said he didn’t want “moral lessons” from a “corporate behemoth”.

I could really do without the land acknowledgment propaganda delivered to me by a corporate behemoth @Qantas,” he said.

“I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels that way. Stick to (1) flying and (2) making money. I don’t want or need moral lessons from you or any other corporation.”

Thankfully, more than a few Twitter users responded to Peterson’s comments to let him know that acknowledgement of country is standard practice in Australia and is not, in fact, “propaganda”.

“With the greatest respect, this issue is way beyond your domain of competence,” Twitter user David Paterson said.

“Recognition of Traditional Owners is a practice widely accepted across the Australian political spectrum. It is not propaganda. There are some issues you as a visitor should leave alone.”

“I’m very much on the right regarding a lot of issues – but on this topic, I tend to support indigenous acknowledgement AND inplementation to society,” said Twitter user Maz.

“I personally think the Aboriginal culture should be Australian culture, similar to how New Zealand does it.”

“‘I am happy to acknowledge the original owners of the land and that the names we give it are colonial overlays,” said Twitter user Jeanette Kennett.

“The original names are beautiful and I hope become more widely adopted. Writing from Naarm (Melbourne).”

Qantas, like many Australian travel and tourism companies, has been vocal about its support for reconciliation, even committing to a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

“Our vision for reconciliation is a shared national identity that celebrates the knowledge and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,” the airline said.

“This will be achieved through the social, economic and cultural inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.”

Peterson is currently in Australia as part of a speaking tour, gaining attention last week after he delivered a speech to a number of Australian politicians including former Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
