Jetstar has outdone its usually higher regarded counterparts Qantas and Virgin Australia when it came to cancelling domestic flights during the month of July.

Figures from the Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics showed that the budget carrier recorded a 3.3 per cent cancellation rate for July, while Qantas cancelled 3.6 per cent of its flights and Virgin Australia cancelled 5.3 per cent. This is Jetstar’s best performance, regarding cancellations, since the pandemic.

Comparatively, Jetstar cancelled 4.2 per cent of its flights in May, while it cancelled 3.7 per cent of flights in June.

Jetstar CEO, Stephanie Tully, told news.com.au that the airline’s improvements come from investments it has made in hiring more staff members.

“These figures show that Jetstar is back on track,” Tully said.

“After a lot of great work by our teams, our punctuality and reliability have returned to pre-COVID levels.

“These improvements are on the back of ongoing investments across the airline in more cabin crew, pilots and engineers, new Airbus A321neo aircraft, and enhanced customer support.”

Tully issued some apologies for the airline’s previously lacklustre operations, asking Aussie travellers to “give Jetstar a go.”

For departures the Qantas network recorded 71.2 per cent for on time departures while the Virgin Australia network recorded 59.0 per cent.

Qantas achieved the highest level of on time departures among the major domestic airlines for July 2023 at 68.9 per cent, followed by Jetstar at 66.3 per cent and Virgin Australia at 58.9 per cent. Of the regional airlines, Rex Airlines recorded 77.4 per cent for on time departures, followed by QantasLink at 72.6 per cent, Skytrans at 69.9 per cent and Virgin Australia Regional Airlines at 60.3 per cent.

The Qantas network (Qantas and QantasLink combined operations) recorded 71.5 per cent for on time arrivals while the Virgin Australia network (Virgin Australia and Virgin Australia Regional Airlines combined operations) recorded 59.2 per cent. Qantas achieved the highest on time arrivals among the major domestic airlines at 68.8 per cent followed by Jetstar at 68.1 per cent and Virgin Australia at 59.2 per cent.

Of the regional airlines, Rex Airlines recorded 74.5 per cent for on time arrivals, followed by QantasLink at 73.2 per cent, Skytrans at 71.9 per cent and Virgin Australia Regional Airlines at 61.7 per cent.
