Footage emerges as death toll in Nepal hits 3218

Rescue workers in Nepal scoured through mounds of rubble for earthquake survivors as the country's official death toll climbed past 2,300 and new tremors sent shocked survivors scurrying outdoors. Footage has emerged reportedly of the moment an earthquake-triggered avalanche hit Everest base camp, with panicked climbers sent running for their lives.

German climber Jost Kobusch, 22, posted the 2.5-minute video on his YouTube channel a day after the earthquake, his caption reading, “The ground was shaking from the earthquake and as soon as we saw people running we were running ourselves to save our lives.”

According to the ABC, reporter Samantha Hawley was on the ground in Kathmandu when the earthquake struck, and visited a hospital in the region.

She described the scene, saying, “The stretchers spill out into the corridors while many patients lie on the floor clearly in pain.”

Hawley added, “The injuries range in seriousness but most commonly they are suffering fractures and head wounds. And as the weather worsens outside, the homeless take refuge in the hospital too making the already chaotic scene worse,” according to reports from the ABC.

Photos are emerging, showing villages turned to rubble after the earthquake, while rescuers continue to dig through debris in Kathmandu.

“Tragically, more bodies are being pulled from collapsed buildings every hour,” the Australian Red Cross said in a statement.

“Communication is down in many areas. Widespread destruction, rubble and landslides are preventing access to provide aid in many villages.”
