Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) has launched a Pack Your Bags campaign with the initiative designed to encourage tourists to return to Queensland following the devastating cyclone Ita.

The campaign, which has swiftly earned praise from Tourism Australia, will be distributed on radio, online and through social media.

“As they’ve done so before, Tourism and Events Queensland has acted quickly and decisively to let the people of Queensland know that their state is open for business and ready and waiting to receive holiday-makers,” Tourism Australia managing director John O’Sullivan said.

The campaign arrives as the Tourism and Transport Forum (TTF) announced that visitor spending will help the Queensland economy recover from cyclone Ita and urged tourists who have booked holidays to travel.

“Anyone who’s booked a North Queensland holiday over the Easter and Anzac Day period should go because most holiday destinations are operating as normal. By all means, contact your travel agent, resort or hotel to confirm but don’t cancel without checking first,” TTF chief executive Ken Morrison said.

Tourism's contribution to the North Queensland economy is considerable, Morrison added, citing 25,000 people employed in businesses that generate over $2 million in expenditure annually.

“Ensuring this activity continues is one of the best ways people from other parts of Australia can contribute to the recovery effort,” Morrison added.
