Qantas yields under pressure as loads slip
By admin

Qantas saw yields and load factors slip in September as demand, measured in revenue passenger kilometres, took a backward step.

Total passengers carried also declined marginally, to just over four million, while capacity climbed 0.2%. Group wide loads fell two percentage points to 78.5%.

Qantas said yields in the first three months of the year fell across both its domestic and international networks.

Capacity growth and weak demand in leisure and regional sectors hit the domestic performance while the growing number of seats offered by overseas carriers and an increase in Qantas seats to Asia impacted the international flying, the airline said.

Passenger numbers for Qantas Domestic and QantasLink fell 2.8% which, combined with a 0.9% rise in available seats, led to a decline in loads of three percentage points to 73.2%.

Jetstar fared better domestically with passengers numbers 1.7%. But with capacity increases of 4.2% outpacing the 3% rise in demand, load slipped one percentage point to 79.7%.

Qantas International carried 494,000 passengers during the month, a rise of 2.2% but loads fell 2.2 points to 83.7% and RPKs fell 2.5%.

Jetstar's international network saw a 3.1% reduction in passengers to 405,000, while RPKs and capacity declined 6.9% and 4.1% respectively which led to a load factor of 72.6%, down 2.2 percentage points.
