Mexico prepares for Day of the Dead

Mexico prepares for Day of the Dead
By admin

Preparations are well underway for the Dia de los Muertos celebrations in Oaxaca, Mexico – a celebration of friends and family members that have passed on that dates back to pre-Colombian times.

The altars have been built in many of the homes and hotels then decorated with a range of traditional dishes and marigolds, masks have been painstakingly created and the special pan de los muertos has been baked. The whole town has been decorated with bright but macabre decorations – every nook and cranny is filled with a shakey-boned skeleton.

For tonight, the celebrations will begin as the spirits of the town's children become the first to return to feast on the dishes that have been prepared for them. November 1 is the time of the adult spirits, while November 2 is the night of farewell.

Check out these pictures of Oaxaca as it gets ready for its visitors…
