KTB in talks with operators as siege ends

Kenyan tourism authorities are consulting with Australian tour operators as they assess the potential impacts of the Westgate shopping mall tragedy.

The siege, which left 67 dead and dozens injured, ended yesterday with president Uhuru Kenyatta calling for three days of national mourning.

Sarah Anderson, the managing director of Kenya Tourist Board’s Australian representative office, said staff were “shocked and saddened” at events.

She also praised the support of the Australian industry and its efforts to reassure tourists that their plans will be unaffected.

“The Kenya Tourist Board is consulting with Australian tour operators and weighing up the short and long term impacts of this tragic attack and assessing what activity and action will need to be taken,” Anderson said.

She reiterated that next month’s Magical Travel Expo in Nairobi will take place with a number of local tour operators in attendance.
