Hilton sets sights on mining sector

Hilton Worldwide will aim to capitalise on Western Australia’s resources boom with the opening of Australia’s first DoubleTree by Hilton property in mining hub Karratha.

The 164-room property, slated for completion by mid-2014, is the result of a management agreement with consortium Ramtron Australia led by Western Australia developer Rothchester Hotel and Resorts.

“The hotel is strategically located to support the ever growing demand from the resources sector and we are confident the DoubleTree by Hilton, Karratha….will be the leading full-service hotel in the market,” Hilton vice president development Australasia Robert Scullin said.

In addition, the introduction of the upscale brand demonstrates Hilton’s commitment to expanding its brand portfolio in the region, according to Scullin.

The property will be Hilton’s 16th property in Australasia and joins the Parmelia Hilton Perth as the second Hilton Worldwide property in WA.

Meanwhile, the large-scale development, despite the high cost of construction in the Pilbara region, represents a vote of confidence in profits to be gleaned from the resources sector.

Rothchester managing director Ron Tondut described the deal as “testament to the tremendous growth” taking place.
