8-year-old boy dies of possible electrocution at Fiji resort

An eight-year-old boy, Cairo Winitana, was found motionless near a flower garden of a Fiji resort last week, with investigators considering electrocution as the possible cause of his death.

Winitana, who was with his family at Club Wyndham Denarau Island, died on Thursday evening, a resort official confirmed to the Sydney Morning Herald.

A nurse at Nadi Hospital reported his death to authorities.

“Initial information gathered is that the child was allegedly electrocuted however the post-mortem will have to confirm that,” a Fiji police spokesperson said.

The eight-year-old’s nationality was New Zealander but he lived in Sydney.

The resort has been working with police to investigate the situation.

“We have expressed our heartfelt condolences to the family and our thoughts remain with them at this time,” a Wyndham Destinations Asia Pacific spokesperson said. “Our management team is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the incident and co-operating with the police and authorities.”

The child’s mother, Amber De Thierry, penned a note on social media describing her heartbreak.

“I loved you my son from the moment I found out I was carrying you and will love you forever more my beautiful, beautiful blue eyes,” she wrote.

Family and friends of the grieving family have set up a GoFundMe to help bring Winitana’s body home.

“As you could all imagine this is a very devastating loss for our family,” the post read.

“We humbly invite you to offer support for both Amber and Clarke as they navigate through this unimaginable nightmare they are now forced to live with.

“We all know Clarke and Amber to be the most loving, kind hearted and genuine people.”

An ongoing investigating is also currently the situation is the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT).

“We are aware of the death of a child in Denarau and are providing assistance to the family,” an MFAT spokesperson said. “For privacy reasons, no further details will be provided.”
