Stepping foot in Venice? $8 please!

VENICE, ITALY - MAY 18, 2012: Tourists in the crowded the bridge in Venice.

Tourist making their way to the gorgeous lagoon city of Venice will soon have to fork over $8 just to hang out.

The city’s council has introduced a scheme, which will come into effect in spring 2024, and apply to the busiest 30 days for visitors in a bid to get tourists to come during the less popular days, according to the SBS. These dates have not yet been determined.

Venice only has a population of 50,000 permanent residents but during the high season the city will get more than double as many tourists. This large amounts of tourists, especially those coming in off cruise ships, have been causing problems and upsetting locals for years.

Venice tourism councillor Simone Venturini said that the aim is to find “a new balance between the rights of those who live, study or work in Venice and those who visit the city.”

But some residents are quite onboard as the decision, which has been proposed at multiple points in the past, has been controversial among residents.

Those without a ticket could cop a fine between 50 euros and 300 euros ($83.64 to $501.88).

Venice is not the only place with a tourist tax on its mind.

Bhutan decided to triple its daily tourist tax. The South Asian country has risen the amount from USD$65 (AUD$95) to USD$200 (AUD$291).

Officials said that the new policy rebrands Bhutan as “an exclusive destination,” attracting “discerning tourists” who have more access to a wider range of higher-quality services.
