$22m airport heist leaves Canadian investigators stumped

Over CA$20 million ($AUD22million) of gold and other expensive goods has been stolen from Toronto Pearson International Airport, leaving investigators clueless.

Peel Regional Police said  gold and other items were stolen on Monday after containers were offloaded from a plane.

“An aircraft arrived here at the airport in the early evening. As per normal procedure, the aircraft was unloaded and cargo was transported from the aircraft to a holding cargo facility,” inspector Stephen Duivesteyn said.

“What I can say is that the container [had] a high-value shipment. It did contain gold but was not exclusive to gold and contained other items of monetary value.”

Officials are currently keeping their cards close to their chest, refusing to name the airline that carried the targeted container, although details have been revealed around the size of the container (5 square feet).

The heist could be the largest in Canada’s history, though due to the ongoing nature of the investigation the total amount of goods stolen is only an estimation.

In 2011-12 the ‘Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist’ occurred, where thieves made off with 3,000 tonne of syrup, valued at $18.7 million ($AUD20.65)  from a storage facility in Quebec.
