Australian man dies on Kokoda Trail

Cancelled Stamp From Australia Commemorating Kokoda Trail Which Went Through Papua New Guinea And Was The Scene Of Fighting Between Australian And Japanese Forces During World War II.

A 48-year-old Australian man has passed away after fainting on the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea.

A spokesperson for the Port Moresby Pacific International hospital said a man was brought in on Sunday night after health complications that arose on the popular trek, he was later pronounced dead.

In a statement to the ABC the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said consular assistance will be provided to the family.

“Our deepest condolences to the family”.

The Kokoda Track was a fierce battle ground in the second world war when Australian and Japanese troops fought along the 96 kilometre jungle trail.

Each year thousands of Australians complete the route that soldiers took over the course of the four-month battle, most popular in April around the ANZAC Day period.
