Flybe airlines goes into administration less than a year after relaunching

Flybe airlines may have flown it’s last flight as it collapsed over the weekend, while their would be travellers told not to head to the airport if they were expecting to fly onboard the airline.

One of hundreds of passengers who were affected, Andrew Gibbins told the Guardian,“I got an email asking me to check in, and 10 minutes later they had gone into administration.”

Originally based out of Exeter, England Flybe was sold to Connect in 2019 before ceasing trading in March 2020, citing the COVID pandemic as a contributing factor.

The airline recommenced operations in April 2022, and as of May last year operated around 530 flights on 23 routes across the UK, Switzerland, France and the Netherlands under the control of ‘Thyme Opco’, a firm linked to U.S hedge fund Cyrus Capital.

Flybe announced it was going into administration via a statement to their website and various posts across social media platforms outlining the impacts of the collapse.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority said it would provide advice and information for those affected, though in the short term customers have been told it would be most effective to find another way to travel including booking new tickets or and taking a train or coach.

Those with Flybe bookings are advised to seek a refund from their banking providers, claim on travel insurance or contact their travel provider if they didn’t book directly with the airline.

Off the 321 staff on Flybe’s books, only 44 will remain with 277 being made redundant.

Ryanair has offered a hand to affected staff, setting up a fast track process to recruit ex-Flybe employees.

The administrators have confirmed that 277 of Flybe’s 321 staff have been made redundant, while the remaining 44 would be retained.

Ryanair, among other airlines have offered a lifeline to staff affected, setting up a fast-track recruitment process for Flybe employees.
