Thailand makes a U-turn and drops COVID travel restrictions

The Thai Government has revoked a recently announced entry policy that would require visitors to provide proof of COVID vaccination upon arrival.

Thailand’s health minister, Anutin Chanvirakul, said the COVID vaccination records was inconvenient and that a panel of health experts agreed to withdraw the rule, which was introduced ahead of an expected influx of visitors from China.

Unvaccinated tourists will also be allowed to enter the country without restriction, according to Charnvirakul.

“Showing proof of vaccination would be cumbersome and inconvenient, and so the group’s decision is that it is unnecessary,” Anutin told reporters.

While it’s not necessary for travellers to provide a COVID certificate upon arrival in Thailand, travellers have been urged to take note of additional rules which may impact their visit:

  • Travellers visiting Thailand from a country which still has COVID restrictions are required to purchase health insurance with COVID coverage of at least US$10,000 plus an additional seven days.
  • Incoming business travellers may be exempt from purchasing health insurance if they can show their hosts have agreed to cover the cost of COVID treatment throughout their stay.
  • Those with a Thai passports are exempt from any vaccination checks and insurance requirements.
  • Travellers that fails to provide required documents must be subject to a COVID test at their port of arrival.

The Thai Government originally dropped its COVID restrictions in October last year, meaning that international arrivals no longer had to provide proof of vaccination or a negative test.
