Airport queues return in anticipation of the school holidays

With the school holidays approaching many are being told to brace for another round of airport chaos with millions preparing for air travel.

9 News reported that long queues were seen at Melbourne Airport ahead of 6am this morning.

The airport estimates that 2.1 million people will pass through from today to 14 July, which is approximately 400,000 more than over the busy Easter period.

Similarly, Sydney Airport has warned customers about long queues as it anticipates 2.1 million people through the airport from 27 June to 17 July, 300,000 more than over the Easter holidays.

Measures to encourage baggage handlers to work have been implemented by Swissport, a contractor for Qantas. Handlers will be paid an extra $50 a day until the end of the year.

Airport goers have been advised to arrive at the airport about two hours early for a domestic flight and three hours for an international flight.

“It’s great that passengers are arriving well ahead of their flights, but it’s important to arrive as close as possible to the advised times, and not any earlier,” Sydney Airport general manager of operations Greg Hay said.

“Some domestic airlines do not open baggage check-in until two hours prior and if you get to the airport too early you could end up having an additional wait.”
