STUDY: 80 per cent of Aussies plan to holiday interstate this year

Northern territory, Australia - May 12, 2016:

The vast majority of Australians are set to cross domestic borders this year for a holiday, according to new research.

The survey by online travel agency Agoda found that 80 per cent of Aussies are planning to holiday interstate this year, with only nine per cent having travelled extensively across the nation.

While more than half the nation is yet to visit the ACT (58 per cent) and South Australia (54 per cent), eight out of 10 Aussies are still to see the Northern Territory, and two-thirds are yet to explore Tasmania and Western Australia.

NSW (80 per cent), Queensland (75 per cent) and Victoria (72 per cent) turned out to be Australia’s most-visited jurisdictions, according to the survey.

City breaks topped the list as the most desired destinations, followed by small coastal towns, islands and the tropics.

Only 12 per cent of Aussies are planning to travel to the outback, and eight per cent to an inland regional centre.

The survey also found that those planning an overseas trip this year and now can’t are more likely to go as far afield as they can by holidaying interstate.

The research coincides with Agoda’s biggest integrated campaign to date, aimed at stimulating domestic tourism across its Asia-Pacific and global markets.

Agoda has signed up thousands of hotel partners in the pre-launch phase of its ‘GoLocal’ campaign.
