You play music in your store, but are you breaking the law?

If you work at a travel agency, you’re probably already well aware of the power instore music has on customers’ habits.

Research shows that music playing in a store can encourage customers to spend more time and money there. Furthermore, playing music may be enough to sway a customer’s choice of store.

A study conducted a few years ago in the UK found that 51 per cent of customers will spend more time browsing in a travel agency if music is playing.

In other words, it’s a no brainer for travel agencies to have some tunes playing instore. However, it’s not just a case of whacking on a Spotify playlist and watching the customers flock on in.

If you use copyright music in your store, you need permission (a licence) from the authors of that music, which is only fair when you think about it.

And by ‘use’, that means anything from playing the radio, turning on a TV in the reception area, copying music from one device to another, streaming music through an iPad, piping music through your phone system, using a background music supplier, playing music on your website, and more.

Thankfully, there is an organisation that has done all the hard work for you, providing the licencing you need to play virtually any commercially released music from anywhere around the world in your store.

OneMusic Australia is a joint initiative between APRA AMCOS (the Australasian Performing Right Association and the Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society) and the PPCA (Phonographic Performance Company of Australia).

The two music bodies have come together to give you easy legal access to all their works, sound recordings and music videos, meaning you only have to pay for one licence – and avoid receiving an unpleasant call from an angry musician.=

OneMusic has worked over several years to create music licences specific to all industry sectors, customised to the size and scale of your operation and then fine-tuned to your actual music use whether that is featured, live, background, or a combination of all three.

Better still, the licences are all offered at affordable prices.

For a deeper insight into how OneMusic works, check out the video below:

So, before you hit play on your next instore track, it might be worth checking whether your business has a OneMusic licence. If not, you can simply click here to obtain one or get a quote.
