Russian tourist killed at popular Sydney beach

A Russian tourist has died after being swept away by a large wave at Bondi Beach on Saturday evening.

The man, who has been identified as 47-year-old Russian DJ Andrei Ivanov, was walking along the rocks with his 45-year-old wife Yulia when a large wave knocked them off their feet and into the water.

A witness identified as Sayed Kaze told Nine News he saw the incident unfold as he was filming from a lookout nearby.

“I saw the wave hit the couple, and I put the phone away and I ran to them,” he said.

Kaze said he could hear Ivanov’s wife screaming for her husband after she climbed to safety.

“She was crying and shouting, ‘my husband is in the water,” he said.

“She was just trying to go and save her husband.”

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Ivanov was pulled from the water by lifesavers and treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

The woman was taken to hospital in a serious condition with cuts and abrasions.

Duty Operations Manager for NSW Ambulance said the man’s death was an absolutely horrendous outcome.

“Paramedics worked closely with other emergency services and did everything possible to try and save his life, but sadly he was unable to be saved,” she said, according to ABC News.

“No matter what you are doing near the water, please be vigilant. It is not worth risking your life.”
