This Mediterranean island will refund your stay if it rains

Italian island Elba will refund tourists’ accommodation prices if it rains during their stay.

Part of the ‘Elba No Rain’ initiative launched last year, the island of Elba has created a money-back guarantee on holidays visiting the Mediterranean island in May or between September and October.

Located off the coast of Tuscany, Italy, Elba is one of Italy’s largest islands, and is part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, the largest marine park in Europe.

Visit Tuscany describes Elba as an “authentic mineralogical paradise” home to 150 varieties of crystals held in natural science museums around the world.

“With its triangular shape dominated over by the thousand-meter high Mount Capanne, the island is rich in gulfs, coves and hiking paths all waiting to be explored,” the tourism website says.

And if rain happens to occur while travellers are visiting the island, they won’t have to pay for their overnight accommodation, Visit Elba said on its website.

“Even if rain is rare on Elba Island in May, it can still occur. But on Elba rain is no longer a problem,” it says.

“With the initiative ‘Elba No Rain’, during the month of May and from September – October, if rain happens to occur during your stay, you won’t have to pay for your overnight accommodation!”

Elba is also marketed as an incredible destination for European history, with the Mediterranean island bearing the marks of multiple ancient civilisations, including the Etruscans, Romans, the Maritime Republic of Pisa, the Medici and Napoleon Bonaparte.

The French military leader was allegedly given full ownership and sovereignty of the island in the 18th century.

Fourteen hotels across the island are taking part in the ‘Elba No Rain’ initiative, including luxury hotels and camping sites, among others.

In order to obtain an ‘Elba No Rain’ tariff, travellers will need to get in touch with hotels individually to request it.

However, in order to receive a refund, it will have to rain for two hours or more between the hours of 10am and 8pm, Visit Elba clarified.
