Watch: Shocking footage of British Airways flight battling strong winds

Flight training at London Southend Airport in an Embraer 170-100, operated by BaCityFlyer, part of British Airways. Circuits being performed, and this was taken whilst they were conducting touch and go circuits.

A video has emerged of a British Airways flight caught in strong winds showing the plane violently tilting from side to side.

The flight, which took off from London, was scheduled to land in the British overseas territory of Gibraltar but was forced to divert its course and land in the southern Spanish city of Malaga instead, according to CNN.

British Airways apologised to its customers, and said: “at no point was there a risk to safety.”

“Due to strong winds in the Gibraltar area, our pilots decided to land in Malaga as a precaution,” said the airline in a statement.

Strong winds are common at Gibraltar airport, and flights are often forced to divert as a precaution.

Twitter user Richard Whalley managed to capture the below footage of the plane, and a warning: the video contains strong language.

Eli Hassett, who was onboard the flight, told the BBC the pilot warned they might have a bumpy landing just before the plane started “tilting on a 45-degree angle”.

“The oxygen masks never came on because the plane wasn’t shaking, it was just tilting like a rollercoaster. It was just flipping and flapping, the plane was … it was a really awful experience,” Hassett said.

“I was saying my last prayers… I was thinking of my kids and my wife, [and thought] I’m going to end up in the straits of Gibraltar.”

Passengers were provided with ground transport to continue their journey to Gibraltar.
