This tiny beach restaurant was just named the best in the world

A little beach restaurant located in an isolated fishing village in South Africa has been named best in the world at the World Restaurant Awards in Paris.

Wolfgat, which only opened last year, is situated in a 130-year-old cottage and cave on the beach at Paternoster.

Its chef, Kobus van der Merwe, who only learned to cook eight years ago, forages every day for ingredients on the shores of the Western Cape, according to News24.

He also makes his own bread and butter, which is a nice touch.

A seven-course tasting menu may cost a fraction of the price of a table at a top Parisian restaurant, at only around $80, but it’s the humble setting, sustainable focus and van der Merwe’s emphasis on back-to-basics cooking that won over judges in the end.

“It’s a very minimalist approach – it doesn’t make sense to gather amazing herbs but then transform them into a sauce that has nothing to do with them,” van der Merwe told News24.

Wolfgat also took out the prize for best Off-Map Destination.
