Thousands affected by Sydney Airport delays

Thousands have been delayed at Sydney Airport this morning due to strong winds.

According to a tweet sent out by the airport, single runway operations are in effect causing some delays to international and domestic terminals.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds from the Victorian border up to the Hunter region with gusts of more than 90 km/h.

Both Qantas and Virgin have warned of delays out of both Sydney and Melbourne, according to News Corp.

“Sydney and Melbourne Airports have reduced the number of flights allowed to arrive and depart each hour, which is impacting all airlines,” Virgin Australia said in a statement.

“This may also affect flights arriving and departing into other destinations across the network.

“Virgin Australia is working hard to minimise delays for passengers, and get everyone on their way as quickly and safely as possible.”

Sydney Airport is urging passengers to check with their airline before arriving at the airport to avoid congestion.

Many have taken to Twitter to post photos of the chaos in departures.

    1. they should plan ahead for day like today. Obviously the weather man said it was going to be windy. Ok, the guys not right 100% of the time but at say 3am they could have a preplanned operation to use Bankstown for all small stuff, like all of Rex fleet, most of QantasLink Dash 8s. They could run buses between the airports. Yes it takes 30-40 mins but many people will be staying in Sydney tonight, cos their flight got cancelled & with curfew in Sydney, can’t catch up.

      It’s not rocket science.
