Police blow up ‘suspicious’ bag of coconuts at Rome airport

The contents of a ‘suspicious’ bag that was blown up at Rome’s Fiumicino airport has shocked onlookers and police alike.

Turns out it was full of coconuts.

Yep, coconuts.

Luckily, a freelance journalist was on the scene to tell social media all about the tragic incident.

The airport was forced to a standstill on October 1 when police blew up a suitcase that was left unattended in terminal 3 around 1pm, according to Ned Donovan, who documented the whole thing on Twitter.

Donovan initially reported the Italian police were rummaging through someone’s undies after exploding their bag, but on closer inspection, he found the contents were even more comical, if not slightly concerning.

Donovan told the Independent the whole incident took place in about 15 minutes and essentially shut down the terminal.

“They stopped anyone going airside while dealing with it and no one was allowed to come into the terminal,” he said.

“But the people inside were just left to wander around.”

In another Tweet, he commented on how ‘Italian’ the whole experience was.

“There’s so much about this incident that I enjoyed and also felt so Italian. They blew up what they thought was a bomb in the middle of the airport while people were about 10 metres away, and then when it was destroyed the police just wandered off and left it to be cleaned up,” he said in a Tweet.
